Hi, I’m Bernie — the founder of Sarong Hut.
This brand wasn’t born out of a business plan. It grew slowly, in the in-between moments of my life: while raising two boys, balancing spreadsheets as an accountant, and flying across the country as a Qantas flight attendant.
Sarong Hut began in 2012 as a side hustle — a small idea tucked between early mornings and late flights. Then, in 2014, chronic fatigue hit — hard. I was completely depleted. My body shut down before I even knew what burnout was.
That’s when everything changed.
Healing took time. I had to slow down, strip things back, and start again — not just physically, but emotionally too. That process of letting go and rebuilding gave me the courage to step into something new.
As I travelled (for work and for myself), I met incredible artisans across Indonesia and India — real people, not factories. We formed friendships. Shared meals. Swapped stories. And eventually, started working together. Not just sourcing sarongs, but co-creating them — the cuts, the dyes, the feel of the fabric. All of it intentional.
In 2024, I took the leap and made Sarong Hut my full-time focus. It wasn’t about chasing trends. It was about creating something lighter. A business with soul. A product that helps people feel good in their own skin — at home, on holiday, or wherever life takes them next.
These days, it’s just me and Jacqui running the show. I design every piece and manage our beautiful production partnerships. Jacqui runs the hut — our little warehouse in Sydney — carefully packing every order and personally responding to customer emails. When you shop with us, you’re supporting a real two-woman team who genuinely care.
Every sarong we sell is made by hand, in small batches, with heart. Designed for women and men who value simplicity, ease, and a sense of freedom — whether you’re packing for a trip or just craving a slower pace at home.
